UN Food Waste Day: collaborative cold chain projects reducing global food loss The Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) marked the UN International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste by highlighting collaborative efforts to expand temperature-controlled storage and transportation networks worldwide.

  • According to a 2024 University of Michigan study, nearly half of global food waste could be eliminated through fully refrigerated supply chains.

  • The organization's Global Cold Chain Foundation (GCCF) is implementing several initiatives, including training programs for cold chain operators in Central America to minimize loss of horticultural produce, and the West Africa Emerging Markets Program partnering with GCCA members to improve perishable product trade and food quality.

  • Additional projects support food banks through guidance, training, and the STOR smartphone app, which connects food agencies with cold storage space owners. GCCF is also partnering on energy efficiency initiatives to help food banks redirect savings toward other critical programs. (AJOT)
