UPS Healthcare expands its cold chain capability in Italy UPS Healthcare has announced a significant expansion in Italy with a €55M investment to enhance two facilities in Passo Corese near Rome and Somaglia in Lodi, adding a total of 100,000 sqm of warehouse space.

  • This expansion is aimed at boosting UPS's ability to deliver premium services to its customers, particularly in the healthcare sector. Both facilities are equipped to handle medical and pharmaceutical products.

  • The Passo Corese facility uses advanced automation technology, featuring over 80 robots capable of navigating 12-meter-high shelves to autonomously pick and sort up to 25,000 crates.

  • Somaglia hub specializes in providing critical temperature-controlled environments, capable of reaching temperatures as low as -20°C, catering to the needs of Italy's pharmaceutical market.

  • Both sites are designed according to the latest sustainability standards, with heating and cooling systems powered by on-site solar panels. (link)

Americold, Arkansas Officials Kick Off $90M Expansion Americold has initiated a $90M expansion of its cold storage and distribution facility in Russellville, Arkansas.

  • The expansion was inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, alongside state and local officials, and Americold executives.

  • The investment includes the construction of a new 131,000 sq. ft. highly automated storage and distribution center.

  • This addition increases the facility's capacity by 42,000 pallet positions and expands the total space by 13 million cubic feet. The expansion is expected to create 30 new jobs in the area.

  • Americold operates 11 sites in Arkansas and 245 facilities globally. The company's growth in Russellville highlights Arkansas's strategic importance in the distribution and logistics sector. (link)

Dachser acquires Central European food logistics provider Brummer
Dachser, a global logistics provider, has acquired Brummer Group, a Central European food logistics company with a strong presence in Germany and Austria.

  • Brummer Group, established in 1977, is recognized for its quality leadership in temperature-controlled transport, warehousing, and contract logistics services, particularly for food.

  • The acquisition is part of Dachser's strategic expansion in the European food logistics sector, following its recent purchases of Frigoscandia and Müller Fresh Food Logistics.

  • The company also secured a joint venture with Fercam in Italy, obtaining an 80% stake and further strengthening its position as a leading European provider in food logistics.

  • The integration of Brummer into Dachser's Food Logistics network will enhance the company's capabilities in southern Germany and Austria, including cross-border shipments.

  • Max Reih, the current COO of Brummer, will continue to manage the operational business under Dachser's Food Logistics leadership. (link)

Magnavale Easton development approaches finish line The Magnavale Easton development, a temperature-controlled storage facility located in Lincolnshire, is nearing completion and is expected to open in Q3 2024.

  • The construction has recently seen significant progress with the installation of essential components such as refrigeration pipework, cladding, roofing, and the refrigeration plant itself.

  • Amanda Cogan, Magnavale’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the facility's role in supporting local food production by minimizing food waste and ensuring product safety.

  • The Easton facility integrates solutions like contract packing to streamline the cold chain process, reducing transport costs and carbon emissions.

  • The facility's commitment to sustainability is further emphasized by its reliance on renewable energy sources and the incorporation of advanced automation technologies.

  • Additionally, the facility prioritizes product safety with innovative systems like oxygen reduction to nearly eliminate the risk of fires, protecting stored products from fire and water damage typically associated with traditional sprinkler systems. (link)
